Outdoor Season 2012 #ualberta #yegfood

Spring is upon us and we’re excited for the outdoor season to begin.  We’re grateful to have had a wonderful indoor season at CAB at the U of A and Robbins Health Learning Center at Macewan U but we’re definitely looking forward to the sunny days and some rainy ones too.

We’ll be a regular fixture at the U of A from Monday to Friday in the Quad and our hours will be from 11am-2pm.  We’ll also be showcasing a new summer menu which will change on a weekly basis.  There will be one grilled feature, one sandwich feature and one vegetarian feature.

This week our grilled feature is a Teriyaki Chicken over Jasmine Rice with our Signature Slaw.  Our sandwich feature is our Fili-Beef Dip topped with a Roasted Onion Jam and au jus.  Our vegetarian dish, which was a hit at the Pop Up we did at Lister Hall last month, is a Sweet Potato and Green Lentil Curry.

We’ve also given our cart a bit of a refresh.  We wanted a cleaner look and to incorporate our new logo.  Shout out to Byron and Jenn for the design and their vision in taking elements of the Philippine flag and transforming it into a spork – perfect!

So after a long week of preparation we’ll be ready to spread the Fili-love tomorrow at 11am.  See you soon.

hot chefs cool bEATS

On Saturday, April 21, a unique culinary event is happening at the Shaw Conference Center.  hot chefs cool bEATs will bring together some of the city”s newest and most innovative eateries, food trucks, chefs and local musical acts to provide Edmontonians an evening of great food, drink and beats.  Hall D of the Shaw will be transformed into a street festival much like the ones held in San Francisco and LA.  There will be no shortage of entertainment from DJ’s, Japanese drumming, street dancers, Mehndi artists and even an ice vodka bar.  I hate using the word, but this is going to be…epic.

For us, we’re glad to be a part of it and we’re so looking forward to working alongside some of city’s culinary heavyweights.  On top of it all the funds raised will be going to support Culinary Team Canada who will be competing at the 2012 Culinary Olympics held in Germany later this year and to support the High School Culinary Challenge which provides opportunities for high school students who plan to pursue a career in the culinary arts through scholarships and mentorships.

Shout out to Gurvinder Bhatia and Simon Smotkowicz for making this happen!

Menu – Pop Up at the Common

When you think of South East Asian cuisine Vietnamese, Thai, and Malaysian come to mind.  Filipino cuisine has a character all on its own.  Many of our dishes have a strong Spanish influence but the flavors are inherently Filipino.

The menu we have put together consists of traditional favorites but with a Filistix twist on them, naturally.  We are very excited to give you a taste of the food we grew up with.

  • Spring Rolls (Lumpia) with a Mango and Jicama Salad
  • Fried Noodles with Roasted Chicken, Shrimp (Pancit Canton)
  • Pembina Pork Belly Adobo (Adobong Liempo)
  • Braised Spring Creek Ranch Beef Brisket in a Rich Peanut Sauce (Kare-Kare)
  • Creme Caramel (Leche Flan)

Tickets are available at Foosh, Bamboo Ballroom, Filistix U of A and Filistix Grant Macewan

Filistix Pop Up at the Common

Pop Up at the CommonOn Saturday, Feb. 18, we are excited to bring you our first Pop Up at the Common.  For one evening only we will “occupy” one of the coolest night spots in town to serve up some Filipino inspired cuisine with, of course, our Filistix twist on it.

Tickets are $30 per person which includes five dishes served family style.  This isn’t fine dining here, the idea is to taste and share each dish while having a great time doing it.   Check back here, as we will be posting the menu later this week.

There will be two seatings, one at 6pm and the second at 8:30pm.  Space is very limited so we encourage you to purchase your tickets early.  Tickets are available at Foosh (10544C – 82 Ave), Bamboo Ballroom (8206 – 104 Street), Filistix U of A (CAB Cafe), and Filistix Grant Macewan (Robbins Health Learning Center) or email us at Filistix@gmail.com.

You’re going to need to burn some of those calories so stay for the after party and dance the night away with the Believe Audio crew.  Groovy beats and delicious cocktails – what better way to spend a Saturday night!

So save the date – Saturday, Feb. 18.   Eat, Drink, Dance.

This week’s features: Soup – Borscht, Lunch – Slow Roasted Pembina Pork Belly w/ Tomato Jam

Thanks to our friends at Riverbend Gardens for the beets.
